Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine design and decoration requirements, research product options and make recommendations for hard materials and finishes.This unit applies to individuals providing advice in a retail, consulting or design studio environment. They analyse and compare product information from a wide range of sources to develop a design solution.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Element: Determine project requirements
  • Review and clarify project brief with client
  • Confirm and evaluate parameters and constraints
  • Select work resources based on the needs of the project
  • Identify and assess aspects of the space that impact on potential solutions
  • Identify key project stakeholders and establish required communication protocols
       
Element: Research material and finish options
  • Select materials and finishes that match the brief and are suited to aesthetic nature of the space
  • Analyse and review intended use against functional features of different products
  • Consider and investigate new hard materials and finish technologies
  • Analyse and evaluate product properties for their safety, suitability and sustainability
  • Identify application issues in terms of available expertise
  • Source and compare information about costs and availability against the project brief

  • Explore, integrate and refine different options through a process of reflection and testing
  • Choose a preferred solution based on research findings and the key objectives of the project brief
  • Prepare a visual representation that communicates the key aspects of the preferred solution
       
Element: Make recommendations to client
  • Present recommendations in a format and level of detail suited to the client and scope of the project
  • Clearly articulate rationale for the chosen solution and present to the client
  • Provide realistic cost estimates associated with recommendations
  • Seek client feedback on the proposed solution
  • Base adjustments made to the final design solution on feedback

Assessment Tasks
